Diamond Enhancements: The Good & The Bad

It is not widely known or entirely understood by the average consumer, but there are a wide-ranging variety of treatments and enhancements that a diamond can undergo which may potentially disrupt and either enhance or degrade the overall value of the diamond when it is in its natural state. Any and all diamond merchants are required by law to announce and clearly disclose any and all diamond enhancements and/or treatments. This is to protect the consumer from getting scammed and/or not getting their money’s worth. Failure on the part of the diamond seller to inform a consumer of any alterations made to the diamond, whether positive or negative, can and will result in potentially extremely costly lawsuits and potential further charges as a result. If you are in the market for a diamond, it is truly as simple as asking the dealer “is this diamond treated or enhanced in any way?” Furthermore, you could also, simply ask to see diamonds that haven’t been enhanced or undergone any sort of treatment. The diamond merchant should be able to and willing to acknowledge on your receipt or invoice that the diamond in which you purchased is in fact, in no way treated or enhanced. If they are hesitant or refuse to do so, then turn around and walk away because they are not an honest or credible diamond seller. Here is a list of some of the enhancements and/or treatments you may encounter when searching for a diamond to purchase: • Lasering: A process by which a laser is utilized to penetrate deep within a diamond to remove seemingly indelible, ugly black inclusions. Chemicals are then brought into the process to advance deeper within the diamond itself to mend and alter the inclusions within the diamond • Heating: Utilization of heat at a very high temperature sintering furnace to alter and effect the color, clarity and/or other aspects of the characteristics of the diamond • Bleaching: At times, the use of chemicals and other bleaching agents are used to lighten or possibly even remove a diamonds color to make it seem whiter/brighter • Gamma/Electron Irradiation: In an effort to adjust the color of a diamond, sometimes gamma/electron bombardment is undergone • Infilling/Fracture Filling: A common shady practice among less than honest diamond dealers is the intentional filling of fractures or surface cavities with foreign substances like hardeners, plastic, glass among other substances to cover up blemishes and insufficiencies within the diamond • Resin/Oil Infusion: In an effort to improve the overall aesthetic appearance of a diamond, sometimes cavities found on the surface of the diamond will be filled with a colorless oil, wax, natural resin or some other form of man-made substances to ultimately improve translucence and transparency within the diamond • Irradiation: This simply means a combination of a bombardment of neutrons along with a heat treatment to essentially, adjust and/or alter the overall color of the diamond
