Diamond Shapes
So you think you know what the difference between a “good” diamond, versus a “bad” diamond, and maybe you do but there is so much more to diamonds, and as such it is essential that when searching around to purchase new diamond, you are able to identify the different shapes and the benefits and/or drawbacks of each of these shapes of diamonds. As far as most people are concerned, the typical diamond is your average round gem that is clear and sparkles with an unparalleled brilliance.
Naturally speaking, diamonds occur in various degrees of sizes and shapes formed over millions of years buried within the earth. While the round-brilliant cut is arguably the most popular diamond shape, there is so much more to it than that. Here is a list of most of the different types of diamond cuts available to you:
• Pear Shaped Diamonds: The pear shaped diamond is a sort of best of both world’s type diamond cut which takes the best characteristics of the oval and marquise shaped diamonds. Easily identifiable by its teardrop shape, it falls into the category of a diamond which tends to best compliment hands with average-length to small fingers. More often though, the pear shaped diamond will be found more often than not on earring and pendants, rather than a ring.
• Oval Shaped Diamonds: One of the more popular of the diamond cuts, the oval diamond is a perfectly symmetrical design, often perfectly suited for women with small hands and/or short fingers. Many people are fans of the oval diamonds as they appear elongated and thus larger than they may actually be in reality, as well as making the hand wearing the diamond appear larger as well.
• Round Brilliant Shaped Diamonds: The trendsetter of the diamond shapes, the round brilliant cut has been the standard bearer by which most other cuts are measured against. By most accounts, the round brilliant diamond account for as much as 75% of all the diamonds purchased by consumers today. Utilizing a highly accurate formula, the round brilliant cut diamond and its 58-facet cut, is expertly crafted between the crown, girdle and pavilion to create a simply stunning diamond creation.
• Marquise Shaped Diamonds: Much like the oval diamond, the marquise diamond cut also carries an elongated shape combined with more pointed ends to create a beautiful diamond especially when expertly complimented by smaller surrounding diamonds.
• Princess Cut Shaped Diamonds: Loved by women around the world who are blessed with slightly longer fingers, the princess cut diamond is a square or sometimes, rectangle shaped diamond. Widely considered to be one of the more modern types of diamond shapes, the princess cut diamond is extremely popular on engagement rings. As a prerequisite to enhancing the brilliance of the princess cut diamond, this cut mandates a heavier weight which must be pushed toward the diamond’s depth. Many times the princess cut diamond will be seen gorgeously embellished with much smaller triangular shape stones as the ultimate compliment to really make the princess cut diamond truly shine brilliantly.
• Emerald Cut Shape Diamonds: Very similar to the princess cut diamond, the emerald cut diamond, is also a rectangular shape, however here you will find the corners cut and rounded off. When deciding on an emerald cut diamond, it is absolutely vital that you pay close attention to the clarity and/or color of the diamond, as far too often the emerald cut diamond sports more inclusions and/or color inferiority than many of the other shapes of diamonds out there.
• Trilliant Shape Diamonds: Originally created and crafted first in the city of Amsterdam, this is one of the few shapes of diamonds that actually vary slightly from gem to gem. The final shape will depend upon the original characteristics of the diamond as well as the diamond cutter’s personal experience and/or preferences. Certainly not for the faint of heart, the trilliant shape diamond is for a particular kind of person with a very specific taste.
• Cushion Cut Shape Diamonds: Bearing an antiquated classic style of cut that many have shrewdly assessed is similar to a cross between an old mine cut diamond (common in the late 19th and early 20th centuries) combined with the more modern and far more common (today) oval cut.
• Radiant Cut Shape Diamonds: With extraordinary brilliance, the radiant cut shape diamond possesses a square or rectangular shape which sports the classiness and elegance of the emerald shaped diamond with the sparkle and beauty of the round shaped diamond. Much like the princess cut shape diamond, the radiant cut shape diamond, which as a result of the design, requires more weight to be directed to the diamond’s depth. Often times a depth percentage ranging upwards on 70% - 80% is not at all uncommon to experience.
