Diamond Fluorescence: Essential or Not?

With so much to consider already when purchasing a diamond, the last thing you may think of, or even having any idea whatsoever about is, the fluorescence of a diamond. When you hear the term diamond fluorescence, it is referring to the ability of a diamond to emit a soft colored glow when observed in front of an ultraviolet light. First and foremost, it is rare that the fluorescence of a diamond is a deal breaker for a consumer looking to purchase a diamond. Rightfully so as well, as the fluorescence of a diamond makes very little difference to the appearance of a diamond, yet remains an important measurable characteristic that is often taken into consideration when grading the quality of a diamond. A result of the natural mineral properties of a diamond, the fluorescence of a diamond has caused many a rift within the diamond expert community, as debates over whether or not fluorescence even belongs in the diamond evaluation process can be easily found. That hasn’t stopped many diamond dealers to justify an increase in price and value of a diamond based on the fluorescence and as such, causes it to remain an important aspect to analyze when considering any diamond purchase. While the fluorescence of diamonds is a hotly contested topic, there is no denying the fact that diamond with colorless grades (D, E,F) or even those which are near colorless graded (G,H,I,J) have been observed to be lower in price when they exhibit fluorescence, while furthermore, faint yellow diamond grades (K,L,M) tend to be more expensive when exhibiting fluorescence. While the hard science behind the reasoning for this has yet to be wholly identified, there is a “theory) which states that, fluorescence has a negative impact on colorless diamonds, resulting in a “cloudier” appearance. Additionally, the positive impact on faint yellow diamonds can be attributed to the blue fluorescence theoretically counter-balancing the natural yellowish color, thus resulting in a diamond which appears whiter. Ultimately When all is said and done, it would be simply put, ridiculous for you to allow the fluorescence or lack thereof within a diamond be a deal-breaker one way or another when ultimately deciding on your purchase. The fact that the influence of fluorescence on a diamond can’t be settled by the supposed experts, it would be simply impossible for the average diamond consumer be expected to be able to not only know the difference, but additionally have the ability to identify the fluorescence with the naked eye or even magnifying glass for that matter.
