When It Comes to Diamonds, Pick the Right Metal

There are many factors that need to be taken into consideration when purchasing an engagement ring, more specifically though, none more so than the diamond itself. So when it comes to choosing the right metal for an engagement ring, don’t let this become a bigger deal than it is. While it is a pivotal choice in terms of how the overall aesthetic appearance of the ring my turn out, it is ultimately a really simple decision, comparatively speaking.

Your choices for metal are platinum, white gold, yellow gold and rose gold. If you are unsure as to which metal would be most desired by your significant other, you can usually make an educated guess based on some of her other jewelry wearing habits. For example, if your girlfriend prefers silver jewelry, then you are best served going with the white gold or platinum metals for an engagement ring. If your girlfriend is frequently sporting yellow gold, well, the choice of metal is obvious. Here are some descriptions of the different metal options you will see when looking for an engagement ring:

  • Yellow Gold: The most common color of gold, and the type of gold that people most closely associate with gold, occurs this way naturally. The weight/purity of yellow gold is measured in karats, not to be confused with the unit of weight for diamonds.
  • Rose Gold: Usually inaccurately described as pink and/or red gold because of its heavily reddish color. Rose gold is a specific combination of gold and copper alloy and it used heavily in the specialized jewelry industry.
  • Platinum: Known for being in many cases, more valuable than gold itself, platinum is among the rarest of metals making it a widely desired engagement ring metal. Moreover, along with its rareness, platinum is widely considered to be one of the most damage-resistant and hardest metals known to mankind, making it ideal for jewelry as well.
  • White Gold: The increasingly popular alternative to platinum, white gold is less expensive yet strikingly similar to platinum aesthetically speaking. Interestingly enough, white gold contains the exact same properties as yellow gold, however it is mixed with separate metals like zinc, palladium and nickel to give it the appearance of being “white”.
